Three main types of networks are concerned by this cursus: access/metro networks, core networks and radio-mobile networks. Although various types of transmission media are considered (copper wire, optical fiber, radio, power line communications), a special focus is dedicated to the convergence between optical and radio communications for the provision of mobile broadband services. One of the objectives of the RTOSA cursus is to get a very good knowedge in the field of network planning, dimensioning and trafficengineering for new generation networks. The RTOSA study track outlines the requirement for an enlightment of current protocol stacks that are far too redundant and uncompatible. A special interest is dedicated to multi-layer traffic agregation and protection-restoration. The benefits and limits of optical transparency facing physical layer impairments are analyzed. The complementarity between wavelength routing and radio cell planning is underlined by means of Radio-over-Fiber technologies.
The RTOSA study track relies on the compulsory ROMA cursus RES346. Three variants of the RTOSA cursus are possible:
1) Specialization in fixed networks:ROMA cursus + "Networks and Performance" cursus (RES381)
2) Optical sytstems and networks: ROMA cursus + "Optical communications" cursus (COM340)
3) Optical-wireless convergence: ROMA cursus + "Radio network planning" cursus (RES341).
